Joseph Okumu had a strong performance, yet he was unable to prevent Reims from suffering a defeat to Toulouse, despite dominating the Ligue 1 match on Sunday evening.
Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu couldn’t aid Reims in recovering from a challenging first half, resulting in a 3-2 loss to the visiting Toulouse in a Ligue 1 clash that occurred Sunday evening.
Okumu himself played quite well. He executed two clearances and four tackles, demonstrating command in winning both of his aerial duels and succeeding in eight of his 12 ground duels.
His passing was consistently high quality, achieving an 83 percent success rate. He was also narrowly missed securing an assist with a sharp cross from the right flank and nearly scored with a header.
The visiting team opened the scoring in the 12th minute through a close-range header by Mawissa Elebi, following Reims’ goalkeeper Diouf’s failure to clear the ball within the six-yard box.
Toulouse extended their lead in the 31st minute with Shavy Babicka’s first Ligue 1 UberEats goal, a beautifully curled shot past Diouf.
This was a setback for Reims, particularly as they were beginning to establish their rhythm. Toulouse added a third goal just before halftime, with Thijs Dallinga converting a penalty after Diouf fouled Agbadou in the box.
Okumu and his team had a stronger second half, with Teddy Teuma scoring shortly after the break in the 48th minute.
Despite their dominant performance, Reims could only manage another goal in injury time through Sergio Akieme, leading to an exciting finale at the Stade Auguste Delaune in the 90th minute.
Reims kept up the pressure on Toulouse, even having another shot cleared off the line by Guilluame Restes, but ultimately, it was Les Violets who walked away with all three points.
This outcome leaves Reims in seventh place with 30 points, trailing the fourth-placed Lille by five points.
