Victor Wanyama Stirs Up Gor Mahia Fans with Message Before the Mashemeji Derby

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has potentially incited the anger of Gor Mahia fans with his encouraging words to AFC Leopards before the Mashemeji derby.

Wanyama fueled the excitement for this weekend’s Mashemeji derby clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

Gor Mahia is set to host AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, April 21, aiming to secure a second victory over their arch-rivals after a 2-0 win in the first matchup. However, fans of Ingwe are hopeful that history won’t repeat itself.

Among those cheering for an Ingwe victory is Wanyama, who began his career at the club before making moves overseas. “This weekend’s agenda is a top match, a derby, one of the biggest derbies in Africa between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia,” Wanyama stated.

“Let’s turn out in large numbers to support our teams. As always here, let Ingwe do their thing. Beat them, let’s go AFC [Leopards].”

Wanyama, who played for Ingwe from 2006 to 2007 before moving to Swedish club Helsingborg, and later had successful spells at Beerschot in Belgium, Celtic in Scotland, and Premier League teams Southampton and Tottenham, and now plays for CF Montreal in MLS, has never been shy about his fondness for Ingwe.

Leopards, motivated by last season’s performance where they managed a 0-0 draw in the first leg and won 2-1 in the rematch, have shown considerable improvement since their loss in September. They have suffered only one defeat in 12 matches in 2024, providing coach Tomas Trucha and his team hope for a favorable result.

K’Ogalo, on the other hand, is banking on their strong track record and recent success in the FKF Premier League, which has put them nine points clear at the top of the table and 16 points ahead of the eighth-placed Leopards.
